The short answer
A Vanuatu passport does not, by itself, give you visa-free short visits to the UK or the Schengen area. If those destinations drive your second-citizenship decision, plan around the visa requirements in force today.
Key takeaways
- Regulation (EU) 2025/11 moved Vanuatu into the Schengen visa-required annex from 3 February 2025: the restriction is no longer a temporary pause.
- The UK introduced its Vanuatu visa requirement in July 2023, and an electronic travel authorisation is not a substitute for a required visitor visa.
- A London connection can require a separate transit assessment; a valid Standard Visitor visa removes the need for a separate UK transit visa.
The two rules that matter
This guide describes the rules at the time of writing and concerns ordinary-passport holders planning visits. Existing immigration permission, another nationality or a specific exemption can change an individual’s position.
| Destination | Position for a Vanuatu passport | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Schengen area | Vanuatu is on the visa-required list. | Build the relevant visa application into your itinerary unless a separate exemption applies. |
| United Kingdom | Vanuatu appears on the UK’s current visa-national list. | For an ordinary holiday or eligible business visit, assess the Standard Visitor route before booking. |
| UK flight connection | Transit has its own rules and exceptions. | Check the actual connection, including whether you pass border control. |
These are established restrictions, not a new announcement. A brochure describing the former visa waivers can lead you to make the wrong comparison.
Schengen access: the restriction is no longer a temporary pause
The Council announced its decision to end Vanuatu’s exemption (opens in a new tab) on 12 December 2024. The subsequent Regulation (EU) 2025/11 (opens in a new tab), dated 19 December 2024, moved Vanuatu into the visa-required annex and removed it from the exempt annex. Published on 14 January 2025, it entered into force 20 days later, on 3 February 2025.
That followed earlier suspensions, including the suspension for all Vanuatu nationals from 4 February 2023. Do not treat the old temporary end date as a date when visa-free access returned.
For a short trip, the European Commission describes a Schengen visa (opens in a new tab) as permission for a temporary visit of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The visa’s own validity, permitted duration and entry count still matter. It is not a residence or employment entitlement.
For a multi-country trip, identify the main destination by the length or purpose of your stay. Under Article 5 of the Visa Code (opens in a new tab), the first-entry country decides the application only if no main destination can be determined. Normally, apply through the relevant consulate responsible for your country of legal residence.
UK visits: check the visa route, not just passport eligibility
The UK introduced its Vanuatu visa requirement in July 2023 (opens in a new tab). Vanuatu remains on the current visa-national list (opens in a new tab), checked for this guide. An electronic travel authorisation is not a substitute for a required visitor visa.
The Standard Visitor route (opens in a new tab) covers tourism and specified activities such as business meetings. It does not generally permit working for a UK company or establishing a home through repeated visits. Approval depends on the applicant meeting the route’s requirements, including evidence that the visit is temporary and adequately funded.
For someone evaluating second citizenship, the practical distinction is straightforward: holding another passport does not remove the separate question of which immigration permission a trip requires.
A connection can change the paperwork
Do not stop your research at the final destination. A London connection can require a separate transit assessment even if you do not plan to leave the airport.
The UK transit guidance (opens in a new tab) distinguishes staying airside from passing border control. Applicable exemptions depend on the traveller and documents held. A valid Standard Visitor visa, for example, removes the need for a separate UK transit visa.
Ask the airline whether collecting baggage, changing airports or the booked connection requires border control. Then check the official rules for that exact journey. A low fare is less useful if the route creates an application you have not allowed time to complete.
Test the passport against your actual travel calendar
Before comparing headline destination counts, write down your five most important trips for the next year. Include the reason for travelling, your expected length of stay and whether the date is flexible.
- Separate essential trips from optional ones. A family visit or recurring client meeting may matter more than access to many destinations you rarely use.
- Record your current position. Compare what your existing nationality and valid immigration permissions already allow with what Vanuatu would add.
- Check each family member. Do not assume one person’s passport or permission answers the requirements for everyone travelling.
- Include the route. List transit airports alongside destinations, especially where separate tickets or baggage collection complicate the journey.
- Budget time as well as money. Appointment availability, document preparation and passport handling can matter as much as the application fee.
Consider a hypothetical entrepreneur whose essential trips are quarterly meetings in London and an annual holiday in France. If the objective is avoiding visa applications for those trips, Vanuatu does not meet that objective on the strength of its passport alone. That remains true even if other features of a second nationality appeal to the entrepreneur.
Conversely, someone who already has suitable access to those destinations should identify a different, specific reason for considering another citizenship. The useful question becomes what additional option the nationality supplies, rather than whether a global passport ranking sounds attractive.
The decision to make before committing
Vanuatu should be assessed on the rights and practical benefits available now. Do not assign value to an assumed restoration of UK or Schengen visa-free access.
In a broader Plan B strategy, keep your citizenship objective, travel arrangements and place-to-live objective separate. For UK and Schengen travel, the next useful step is a destination-by-destination permissions check. If a proposal cannot explain that clearly, the comparison is not ready for a financial commitment.
Frequently asked questions
Can you visit the Schengen area visa-free with a Vanuatu passport?
No. Regulation (EU) 2025/11 moved Vanuatu into the visa-required annex, and it entered into force on 3 February 2025. Build the relevant visa application into your itinerary unless a separate exemption applies.
Do Vanuatu passport holders need a visa for the UK?
Yes. The UK introduced its Vanuatu visa requirement in July 2023, and Vanuatu remains on the current visa-national list. An electronic travel authorisation is not a substitute for a required visitor visa.
Does a UK flight connection need a visa?
It depends on the journey: the UK transit guidance distinguishes staying airside from passing border control, and exemptions depend on the traveller and documents held. A valid Standard Visitor visa, for example, removes the need for a separate UK transit visa.
