Overview
Golden Visa in Europe: Latvia and Hungary
A Golden Visa is a residence permit granted for a qualifying investment. It gives the right to live in the country, not its citizenship: naturalization is a separate process, and citizenship by investment is a different kind of program. Outside Europe, the UAE Golden Visa is a renewable long-term permit.
Two of the programs here are in Europe. The Hungary Golden Visa is a residence permit of up to 10 years, renewable, through a regulated real estate fund or a donation to a public-interest higher-education institution, with no minimum stay. The Latvia Golden Visa is a temporary residence permit through equity in a qualifying company; its real estate route closed to new applications on 15 September 2026.
To compare the two side by side, read the guide to European residency by investment. Where a route involves property, the guide to the real estate Golden Visa sets out the two questions to settle before you buy.
